The Onion
I was at the Onion for a while. I started submitting headlines to the Onion News Network web video division as an intern in 2007, I became a staff writer in 2010, and I was there until the end of 2012. While I was there, I wrote web videos; I helped create, develop, and write web series for the Onion’s Youtube channel (including Sex House); and I was staffed on two TV shows (Onion SportsDome on Comedy Central and Onion News Network on IFC).
Onion Digital Studios
In 2012, Youtube gave the Onion a grant to make content for their Youtube channel. I was part of a staff that created, developed, and wrote a bunch of web series with this money.
One of these shows was Sex House, a show based on a pitch I wrote about the cast of a poorly-conceived reality show revolting against the producers. Vulture named it one of the 207 Best Comedy Moments of the 2010s; Gawker called it the best show of the summer; Jacobin wrote about its politics. Start watching the whole ten-episode show here.
We also wrote Porkin’ Across America, about an affable TV host who sets off to eat pork in all 50 states, then winds up destroying his family and turning himself into a pig. Start watching the whole eight-episode show here.
Then there was Lake Dredge Appraisal, which was Antiques Road Show with the added complication that the items appraised had all been dredged from a lake. We somehow ended up making nineteen episodes of this. Start watching them here.
Onion SportsDome
I was a staff writer on Onion SportsDome, which ran for one season on Comedy Central. I also helped develop and write the pilot. Very few clips of this are still around, but here’s one with a music box containing the soul of Dr. James Naismith.
Onion News Network on IFC
I was a staff writer on the second season of Onion News Network on IFC. Here’s a segment I wrote about astronauts leaving trash on the moon.
